Our cities are not islands, they all face comparable challenges: global mega-trends are changing our cities, even if with different intensity. Globalization, digitalization, urbanization, social heterogeneity, demographic change and climate change influence the development of and the life in our cities considerably.

The UN Agenda 2030 defines general goals about how our cities should be developed in the face of global mega trends. To the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) belongs also SDG No. 11: making cities and municipalities inclusive, safe, resistant and sustainable. Still, the other SDGs are also of central importance for the development of our cities: the fight against poverty, the provide everyone with clean water, affordable and clean energy, sustainable economic growth, fair working conditions, efficient and high-performance infrastructure, measures to fight climate change, the promotion of biological diversity, the rule of law, and last but not least global partnership to reach the goals of the UN Agenda together.

Our cities are focal points and hotspots for global development. At the same time, we as citizens and firms expect cities to contribute heavily to sustainable development. With all these expectations and objectives, it is all the more important to think about and to carry out these complex and demanding tasks together. We can only further the advancement of our cities as living ecosystems according to the principles of sustainable development together.

The goal is the development and implementation of sustainable strategies. Sustainability includes four dimensions: the ecological, economic, social and cultural one. In the frame of sustainable strategies it is particularly important for him to fight youth unemployment, to shape the demographic change for all generations in a fair way, to develop new ways for urban mobility as well as to link education systems with economic developments in a stronger way. This could be achieved by cooperating and by linking up the civil society, the city administration, politics, economy and science.
